SoberRide makes this St. Patrick's day a safer one

On St. Patrick’s day, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program wants you to do more than rely on the luck of the Irish to make it home safely. This Washington, D.C., area nonprofit organization is offering a St. Patty's Day SoberRide program that will be in operation beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17th (St. Patrick's Day) and continue until 4:00 a.m. the following day as a way to help keep local roads safe from drunk drivers during this traditionally high-risk holiday weekend.

In 2011 (latest available data), 400 people were killed in traffic crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday and weekend. More specifically, there were 143 drunk driving fatalities, accounting for 36% of the total traffic deaths and 69% involved a driver with a BAC of .15 or higher (also known as Hardcore Drunk Drivers).

Among 15-20 year olds, 57% of the 37 traffic fatalities involved alcohol during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

That’s why WRAP wants to help you and your friends make it home from the festivities. In fact, last St. Patty’s Day [2012], a record 606 people in the Greater Washington area used WRAP’s SoberRide service and made it home safely!

If you’d like to receive a free cab ride home this holiday (up to a $30.00 fare), please call 800-200-8294 (TAXI). AT&T customers may dial #WRAP from their wireless phones.
