A decade of alcohol-involved driving deaths, visualized.
Using data from NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System, John Nelson of IDV Solutions created an image of deadly alcohol-involved crashes across the nation.
As Atlantic Cities reports, there are a few surprises in the data. While you would expect DUI fatalities across the nation to neatly align with larger population clusters, some major cities evince a relatively low level of deaths, while some sparsely-populated states have unusually high levels of alcohol-involved driving fatalities. This can be ascribed to a number of causes, such as local culture, transportation infrastructure, or the legal response to drunk driving.
From 2010 to 2001, drunk driving fatalies declined 26%. Since 1982, annual drunk driving fatalities have declinedby 52%. This is real progress, and with new programs to address hardcore drunk drivers, stronger laws, and greater awareness, it shows no sign of abating.
