Join us at National Press Club for a CARS briefing

The facts:

  1. According to NHTSA, 9,878 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2010.
  2. Among repeat drunk driving offenders studied, 41% qualified for a drug use disorder and 44% for a psychiatric disorder that was not substance related.

Understanding the role that mental health issues play among repeat drunk driving offenders is increasingly important for prevention and treatment of DUI. With this in mind, The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility is hosting a briefing to discuss the progress made to date on the groundbreaking Computerized Assessment and Referral System (CARS) at the National Press Club on Wednesday, September 25, from 9 to 10 a.m. The event is open to the public.

Already piloted with support from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), CARS was created with the goal to provide court, treatment, and probation personnel with a complete assessment of the multiple disorders that affect repeat drunk drivers.

CARS packages a powerful assessment tool with a user-friendly interface that will more effectively screen for mental health disorders, alcohol dependence and drug dependence for DUI offenders.

Principal Investigators Dr. Howard Shaffer and Dr. Sarah Nelson of the Cambridge Health Alliance Division of Addictions, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, will be on site to discuss the progress made thus far on the project and the future implications of that progress in the fight to eliminate drunk driving.

If you are interested in attending the CARS briefing, please contact Devin Burke at [email protected].

If you are unable to attend, you may still watch the briefing during the same time via the event’s live-stream feed here.
