Have a Fun, Safe Labor Day!
It was a good summer, wasn’t it? Now that Labor Day is here, a holiday that began in 1894 to honor our nation’s workers, many are starting to close the book on it. But that doesn’t mean the responsibility page has to be forgotten.
As you attend your last cookout and end of summer parties, please remember these tips:
Party Hosts
- Don’t serve alcohol to anyone under 21
- Learn what constitutes a standard pour, and stick to it. Don’t overserve your guests.
- Serve food and non-alcoholic drinks.
- Don’t give friends a hard time if they choose not to drink.
- Make sure folks have a safe way to get home.
Party Guests
- Eat a full meal, and alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
- Designate a driver or safe ride home before you ever leave your house.
- Pace yourself, and know your limits.
If you’re planning to hit the road also keep in mind, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, of the 424 traffic fatalities that occurred nationwide over Labor Day weekend last year, more than one-third (38 percent) involved drunk drivers (.08 BAC or above).
Of those drunk driving fatalities, seven out of 10 of them involved a driver with a BAC level of .15 or higher, which is nearly twice the legal limit for driving in all 50 states and DC.
